Resistance (concept)

A resistant task is a task that you have a hard time completing even though you understand it’s important. The resistance might come from different sources. Maybe the task is simply difficult. Maybe it’s associated with negative emotions. Maybe it’s simply boring. Maybe it’s making you anxious. But the reason doesn’t matter for detection: it’s simply the thing that is supposed to be done (it’s important) and doesn’t get done.

I prefer to define it in terms of the task itself. It’s not a “user error”. Something else is an issue and the system should help the user find it and solve it.

Whenever you check off various tasks but tend to avoid one of them, Task Compass will take a note of that and eventually it will identify that task as resistant. A resistant task might be one that is psychologically difficult for you to get started.

If Task Compass notices this, it will suggest scheduling a focus session in your calendar. It doesn’t mean that you must complete the task by then, but simply that you’ll devote a segment of time to get started on that task. If the task is still not done after the focus session, Task Compass will suggest scheduling a new session.
